Integrated Library Management Systems
The Institute for Computer and Information Engineering
has developed a technology allowing one for fast and effortless establishment
and maintenance of integrated library management systems. The software
is called LIS/DIS.
LIS/DIS is the software computerizing basic functions of libraries and
documentation centers. It has been developed on top of Micro CDS/ISIS,
as a collection of programs written in ISIS/Pascal. LIS/DIS has been designed
as a flexible system containing the following modules:
-
Catalogue
-
Loan subsystem
-
Books acquisition
-
Statistics
-
Accounting
-
End-user interfaces
In addition, a special module for interfacing the system with MS Word,
Word Perfect and other wordprocessors using the RTF format has been implemented
to generate high quality printouts
A flexible validation subsystem has been provided in order to ensure
high quality data entry in the catalogue. The E-R methodology makes the
data entry process simple and user friendly. The procedure enables one
accessing a thesaurus structure on-line to support indexing of the library
material.
From the terminal user standpoint LIS/DIS fulfills the following criteria:
-
user-friendliness when entering, updating, deleting, checking data;
-
a simple interface for searching and browsing data from Catalogue (the
ordered items are also visible);
-
intelligent prompting of the end user whenever in doubt;
-
powerful Help facilities integrated with the pull-down menu system;
-
thesaurus maintenance subsystem.
-
WWW interface to the library resources
